One social and economic concern that is forming dark clouds over the economies all across the globe is food security. Several private organizations and NGOs have been working in collaboration with governments and farmer groups to come out with suitable solutions for the problem. DuPont is one such organization that has collaborated with the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) to address the issue. The former has commissioned the EIU and the Global Food Security Index was ultimately launched by the latter on July 10, 2012 in Washington.
Ellen Kullman, Chair and CEO, DuPont has emphasized the role of common food security metrics in the process of increasing global food security. There are stats indicating that billions have been invested to resolve this issue but nothing productive has come to the surface till date. The lack of accountability and the absence of proficient scale for measuring food security have been amongst the top reasons behind the insufficient outcome of the investments made so far. And hence a global standard to measure the food security and the impact of investments and collaborations at the local level is the need of the hour.
The Global Food Security Index addresses the main factors that are responsible for the scarcity of food in 105 countries and points out the areas where the reforms are needed and improvement should be made at the earliest. The root cause of hunger would be addressed if the four essential parameters of affordability, nutritional quality, availability and safety are taken care of.
This issue has also been raised in the recent G8 and G20 summits. It was emphasized during the Camp David G8 summit that leaders, private businesses and NGOs have to work together as one force to achieve the aim of global food security.
The underlining cause behind the food security index is to promote collaboration, come out with suitable solutions and take the necessary actions that would lead to feeding the entire starving population.
