The Concept Behind Buteyko Breathing Techniques

Lungs and Breathing

The Buteyko Breathing Technique is used to naturally deal with asthma attacks and other breathing ailments. It can also be used to calm a panic-stricken person down. Buteyko Breathing Technique is highly recognized by most physicians because of its effect in the process of asthma control and attack reduction.

Still, like most alternative treatment methods, scientific thoeris should be fully understood before starting the treatment. This article will present you the concept behind Buteyko Breathing Technique.

To grasp the hypothesis behind Buteyko breathing techniques in full, we should first get the general idea behind three scientific things: Hyperventilation, Vertigo Effect and Carbon Dioxide (CO2).

Hyperventilation is when someone breathes in and out more often than what is required. (Not necessarily normal — more on that later.) It makes someone breathe in more oxygen and release more Carbon Dioxide.

Vertigo is the feeling of dizziness when someone breathes too much. It is because cells are craving oxygen. A paradox, I know. CO2 actually helps Oxygen to go where it needs to – the cells. Without it, an oxygen atom stays glued onto the hemoglobin, and thus, misses the cells that require.

Carbon Dioxide is scarcely in the air (it is mainly nitrogen) and the body creates this air as a waste material from energy creation.

With these united, we can say that the more a person hyperventilates, the less he gets the oxygen his body needs, although he has a lot of that in his body

Most persons breathe in and out faster than what is required, and that is innate to them. That is still hyperventilation.

With those support theories clear, let’s say an asthmatic hyperventilates by default. Since he hyperventilates innately, he will eventually exhale enough CO2 for his body to scramble for Oxygen. Naturally, his body does not want to die, so what does it do?

It thickens the air ducts. The lungs create more mucus. Coughs begin to start, and because his airways in his lungs are full of mucus and are constricted, whistling sounds are audible. Sounds familiar? Yes, an asthma attack.

Give the body the thing that it wanted in the first place: more oxygen by adding more Carbon Dioxide in the body, and the bodily symptoms will start disappearing and will be triggered back less often in the time to come. That is the concept of Buteyko breathing techniques.

Gas and diarrhea are horrible to suffer from, but there is a natural way to relieve these common health conditions using lemon verbena. Lemon verbena is a flowery leafy green lemony scented herb that helps not only relieve gas and diarrhea, but also helps calm down the digestive system.

Lemon verbena contains natural volatile oils in it that help cleanse the body and digestive system relieving gas and diarrhea. Chronic Fatigue — The Facts You Should Know

Diagnosis and Therapy

The fatigue must have been present at least six consecutive months and the corresponding symptoms must have developed after the fatigue. A clear definition of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, its symptoms, and treatment options will help sufferers get a clearer understanding of the syndrome.

What is Chronic Fatigue?
The basic definition of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome does not make sufferers feel much better. The syndrome is unexplained and is marked by weakness, fatigue, muscle pain, lethargy, trouble sleeping, and even fever and swollen lymph nodes. There is no known cause for the fatigue that is present in an individual that has no relation to over-exertion and is not rectified by rest.

Symptoms
Some of the symptoms associated with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome have been discussed. However, there is a very long list. There are a variety of symptoms that patients are very aware of and then there are other symptoms only doctors seem to notice. Regardless, when the symptoms are present for a period of time for no apparent cause and seem to have no remedy then Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is a frequent diagnosis.

Some of the frequent symptoms of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome include:

– Muscle Aches
– Persistent Fatigue
– Intermittent Fatigue
– Depression
– Tiredness
– Headache
– Swollen Lymph nodes
– Depression
– Memory Loss
– Weakness
– Difficulty Concentrating
– Achy Joints

Frequently Chronic Fatigue Syndrome begins during periods when individuals have been sick, under a tremendous amount of stress, or for no apparent reason at all. Many individuals have noted that after bouts with the flu, mono, a cold, bronchitis, hepatitis, and other similar illnesses CFS arises. Unfortunately, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome persists for months, sometimes coming and going and other times constantly affecting the patient. Other illnesses begin to clear up after a few days or weeks, but Chronic Fatigue Syndrome sticks around with no clear cause.

Diagnosing Chronic Fatigue
Doctors find it very difficult to diagnose Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. The reason why is because so many of its symptoms are symptoms of other illnesses. This is why many doctors like to see patients with the same symptoms that began after the fatigue for at least six months before giving a diagnosis. Obviously, sufferers of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome find the lack of an early diagnosis difficult to bear on top of their symptoms. However, doctors like to rule out diseases like Lupus and Multiple Sclerosis, as well as other diseases, before diagnosing Chronic Fatigue.

Additionally, researchers and doctors are becoming more aware of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and are more likely to make an earlier diagnosis based on fewer symptoms than ever before. That is not to say that Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is easy to diagnose, because it is not. However increased awareness and new definitions are helping doctors and patients of Chronic Fatigue each and every day.

Treatment Options
The treatment options for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome are varied and include alternative as well as prescription alternatives.

Some of the alternative care management options for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome include avoiding stress and undertaking light exercise. Other treatment options that work for some individuals include massage, aquatic therapy, chiropractic therapy, yoga, self hypnosis, tai chi, and even acupuncture. Psychotherapy has also proven helpful to sufferers of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome because it helps sufferers learn to cope with their symptoms.

Prescription treatment options for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome have not been approved by the FDA. There are however other prescription medications that are used to treat the symptoms presented with Chronic Fatigue. Frequently, the primary use of the medicine is secondary and its side effects are what benefit Chronic Fatigue sufferers. Medicines like antifungals, antidepressants, antivirals, cardiac drugs, antihistamines, immunoglobulins, corticoids, anti-inflammatories, and anti-convulsants among others are frequently prescribed to CFS sufferers.

Do You Have CFS?

If you are worried you have Chronic Fatigue Syndrome or have some of the above stated symptoms for months on end then you should make an appointment with your physician. It is a good idea to keep a journal of your symptoms, when they began, and if new ones appear. This will help your doctor make the proper diagnosis and help receive some relief from your symptoms sooner.

Tesco Value Milk Chocolate Digestive Biscuits Product Review

Digestive System

I have been penny pinching when shopping again and more so when it comes to the biscuit isle. I have had a lot of success with the cheaper biscuits and my boys have enjoyed them so I thought I would give their Value milk chocolate digestive biscuits a go for a change.

~~PACKAGING~~

The biscuits come in a plastic wrapper which is white and blue in colour. The front has the Tesco Value logo on it and a picture showing some of the biscuits. On the reverse of the wrapper we have all of the product information including the ingredient and allergy advice. It is here that you can also find the nutritional values.

The ends of the wrapper are blue and they are quite hard to get open but there is a tear strip to one end of the packet which makes for easy opening.

~~APPEARANCE AND TASTE~~

The biscuits are a good size, they measure approximately 7cm and the widest point in the middle and are a round shape. They are not overly thick and measure roughly ½ a cm thick. The bottom of the biscuit is a golden brown colour which resembles a normal digestive biscuit and has the digestive name in the middle, there is also a small pattern around this. The top of the biscuit is covered in a lovely brown milk chocolate. There is a faint smell to the biscuits and this is a mixture of the wheat biscuit and the milk chocolate. It is nice ad always makes me feel like eating a biscuit when smelling it.

When it comes to eating the biscuits we do have fun, they taste great. I do enjoy the contrast of the crunchy crumbly biscuit against the smoothness of the chocolate. The biscuit has a very pleasant taste which is just like any other digestive. It does remind me a little of a wheat taste but it is good. The chocolate also tastes great as it is milk chocolate and not the dark variety. I have found there to be a good amount of chocolate on each of the biscuits and the whole things works well together. I do have to bite my biscuits as I am not able to fit them whole into my mouth like hubby an when doing so I do find they make a few crumbs. I am not overly bothered about this as I do find it easy to brush them off my clothes. Unfortunately my boys take smaller bits and therefore they do make even more crumbs which usually end up over the floor. I have started to give them their biscuits on a plate to cut down on the amount on the floor.

My boys do enjoy their biscuits but I have found that they have to hold the biscuit for longer than me and the chocolate does tend to melt on their finger but they don’t seem to care and have fun licking this off. The quicker the biscuit is eaten then the less chocolate on the finger.

I am not a tea drinker so I am not personally able to comment on how good they are for dunking but I have spoken to hubby about this and he says they are an average dunker. He says they don’t tend to go soggy to quickly and break off resulting in a sloppy mess at the bottom of the cup and the heat from the tea makes the chocolate melt which he enjoys as it is smoother when eating. He has said that his cup of tea does end up having a hint of chocolate though when he has dunked with these biscuits.

~~INFO~~

The biscuits come in a pack size of 300g and I find this to be good, there are roughly 25 biscuits in each pack but I cannot be exact as the packet I have is nearly empty.

The packaging is unfortunately not recyclable.

There are some allergy warnings on the pack of the packet and these include the fact that they contain milk, wheat, gluten and soya. The recipe is nut free and so to is the factory which these are produce in. Tesco cannot confirm that the ingredients are nut free though.

The ingredients are:-

Wheat flour, milk chocolate (23%), vegetable oil, sugar, wholemeal wheat flour, glucose-fructose syrup, raising agents (sodium bicarbonate, ammonium bicarbonate), salt

The milk chocolate contains, sugar, cocoa butter, cocoa mass, dried skimmed milk, whey powder, butteroil, emulsifier (soya lecithins, polyglycerol, polyricinoleate), vegetable fat, natural flavourings)

These biscuits are suitable for vegetarians.

It is best to store these biscuits in a cool dry place and away from sunlight. Once the packet is opened they need to be kept in an air tight container so they do not go stale. The shelf life is good and the latest packet we have has over 6 months on them.

The nutritional values for each biscuit are:-

Calories – 85

Sugar – 4.5g

Fat – 3.9g

Saturates – 2g

Salt – 0.1g

~~PRICE AND AVAILABILITY~~

These biscuits are part of the Tesco Value range so they are only available in their stores, other supermarkets do their own version of them though. They are priced at around 50p per packet which I feel is excellent value for money compared to the branded varieties.

~~RECOMMENDED?~~

I am more than happy to give these biscuits the full5 stars, they have a lovely rich taste which works well with the smooth chocolate and my boys love them. Hubby claims they are quite good for dunking too. They are cheap and cheerful and well worth trying. I think these would be an ideal extra for children’s parties or a lunch box or picnic treat.

Michael Jackson on the Cover of Architectural Digest Magazine

Digestive System

The November 2009 issue of Architectural Digest magazine is one of many magazines in the months since Michael Jackson’s June 25, 2009 death to feature his visage on the cover.  The accompanying articles and photographs offer the most subtle and poignant piece I have read referencing the late King of Pop.  Why did it take “The International Magazine of Design” to finally get a tribute right?

Most of the credit must go to the two men responsible for the bulk of the piece.  The main article, titled “Michael Jackson’s Neverland: Has Anyone Seen My Childhood?” features insightful text by Paul Theroux and crisp photography by Harry Benson.

The initial article text by Paul Theroux reflects on a visit he made to Neverland Ranch and phone interviews he conducted with Michael Jackson.  Within this article, the author reflects on the seemingly outlandish aspects of Neverland: the zoo, the arcade, and the cartoons as one might reflect on a vase, a painting, or a coffee table in suburbia.

He viewed Neverland Ranch as Michael Jackson’s home and a reflection of the man who owned it.  There is no judgment and no questioning.  There is no rote praising and affected sentimentality.  Michael Jackson was a man who lived (for however brief a time) a life within four walls featured in an architectural design magazine.  For a man who never had a traditional childhood, yet tried to create the essence of it with an estate devoted to the idea of perpetual childhood, there could not be a more fitting tribute than to salute his grand vision of what the part of his life he longed for could have been.

The accompanying photos by Harry Benson are bold visual representations of both Jackson and Neverland Ranch.  Benson also provides an accompanying write-up from the unique perspective of a photographer who was behind the lens on a few different occasions during Michael Jackson’s life.  After the plethora of old friends, trusted loved ones, and arch-rivals issuing glowing reviews and reflections, it is a joy to read the thoughts of a man who “…wasn’t close to Michael, we were friendly and respectful of each other, and that’s really all you want, someone who allows you to do your job.  I will miss him.  We will all miss his immense talent.” [p. 163]

A collective tribute to Michael Jackson.  A visual and textual feast with no grandstanding and self-serving monologues is what any reader will find in the November 2009 issue of Architectural Digest.

The Heart of the Matter- Dual Diagnosis and its Necessity for Treating Addiction

Diagnosis and Therapy

Article by Groshan Fabiola

Many people who enter an inpatient substance abuse clinic have mental health issues that overlap with addiction. Substance abuse is often a symptom of larger issues that must be treated just as intensely as the substance abuse itself. You can’t fix one without fixing the other.

It’s because of this that a quality inpatient facility will function as a dual diagnosis rehab to take care of both substance abuse and co-existing conditions such as bipolar disorder or depression.

Depression is one of many things that can contribute to a problem with alcohol and drugs. All too often this is not recognized, and a dual diagnosis is overlooked. Alcoholism and drug abuse are also common symptoms of bipolar disorder, and the substance abuse cannot be dealt with effectively until the underlying disorder is diagnosed and treated too.

A good addiction treatment facility will evaluate each patient and diagnose any disorders that accompany the problem of substance abuse. After this, inpatient counseling, group therapy and daily routines address each individual’s diagnosis. The result is that when a patient leaves the inpatient clinic, they have an excellent understanding of themselves and have an aftercare plan that helps them cope with life free of addiction. By sticking to the aftercare plan, the prognosis for the patient skyrockets, and the chance of relapse decreases.

Everyone needs coping skills to get through the down periods of life, as there will be many of those in each person’s lifetime. Today’s inpatient drug rehab centers focus as much on life skills as they do on addiction because the addict is a person who has forgotten how to live a life of joy, determination and stability. During treatment, they learn to celebrate the beauty, joy and opportunities of life and to endure through its disappointing and difficult times. When they leave; they take with them new life skills to live a new life.

Get That Flat Stomach Look? Get Rid Of Big Tummy, Pot Belly And Beer Belly Fast.

Lungs and Breathing

Article by Chris Chew

How to get that flat stomach look and get rid of big tummy, pot belly and beer belly fast?

By exercising your Transversus Abdominus Muscle. This is the muscle in your abdomen that holds your stomach in giving you the flat belly look. This muscle acts like a corset around your tummy by holding your tummy in and if the muscle is weak, your belly will be distended more easily making your tummy looking much bigger than it should just like having a beer belly. This is one of the reasons why people have pot belly or beer belly besides simply blaming it on tummy fat. This is the muscle that can help you get that flat stomach look. If you want to get that flat stomach look, you must strengthen this muscle.

Just to have a feel of how this muscle work, try blowing out all the air in your lungs and pull your tummy in. There, you have just used your transversus abdominus muscle to execute that movement.

Start the exercise by exhaling all the air from your lungs hard. At the same time, pull in your tummy as tight as you can and at the same time visualizing your belly button is about to touch your spine. Do breathe lightly in that position and hold the posture for about 45 seconds. Then repeat the exercise for a few more sets. You will then be teaching your abs muscle to continuously hold your tummy in giving you flat stomach look.

The beauty of this exercise is that you carry it out everywhere and anywhere without ever going to the gym. It is so discreet that people will not even notice you exercising even when you are waiting for the office lift or at your desk at work.

A more effective version of this exercise would require you to be on all fours in a crawling position. Then execute the exercise as described above except that this time, you are on your hands and feet. Do both exercises every other day and when combined with a fat loss routine of a proper diet, weight training and cardio exercises, you will get that flat stomach look in no time along with that glorious six pack abs.
